Preparing for Your Trek

Preparation is key to a successful climb. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  • Fitness Training: Engage in regular cardiovascular and strength training exercises to build your endurance.

  • Gear Check: Ensure you have appropriate clothing, footwear, and equipment. We provide a detailed packing list upon booking.

  • Acclimatization: Spend time at higher altitudes before the trek if possible, and choose a route with a longer acclimatization period.

  • Health Precautions: Consult with a healthcare provider regarding vaccinations and medications for altitude sickness.

Equipment and Gears Required

We recommend the following individual equipment list for climbing expeditions. Our guides will check your gear for compliance before departure. Please note: your luggage will be carried by our porters, who can carry a maximum of 20kg. It is advisable to comply with this weight limit as a safety measure. You will need to keep warm and as dry as possible while climbing. Wearing layers of clothing that you can remove as you walk and heat up is recommended.

Mountaineering Bags Required

  • Duffle Bag or Backpack: To keep climbing items (carried by porters)

  • Day Pack: To keep items you will need on a day-to-day basis

  • Sleeping Bag: For extreme cold weather (-7 to -10 Celsius)

  • Sleeping Bag Liner

  • Over Bag: To keep the bag dry

Garments Required

  • 3 Pairs of Wool Socks

  • 3 Liner Socks

  • 3 Short Sleeve Shirts or T-Shirts: Made from wicking material to keep you dry

  • 1 Pair of Gaiters

  • 1 Light Wool/Warm Hat

  • 1 Fleece Jacket

  • 1 Gore-Tex Shell Jacket / Windproof Jacket

  • 1 Pair of Fleece or Leather Gloves

  • 1 Pair of Gore-Tex Mitten Shell / Gloves

  • 1 Pair of Heavy Trekking Pants

  • 1 Balaclava

  • 1 Scarf

  • 1 Sun Hat with Wide Brim for Sun Protection

  • 1 Pair of Tennis Shoes/Trainers: To wear in camp

  • 1 Pair of Mountaineering Boots: Please break your shoes in well before you come to Kilimanjaro

  • 1 Waterproof Jacket (with hood or rain hat) & Trousers

  • 2 Pairs of Quick Dry Pants: Preferably with zipper legs

  • 2 Long-Sleeved Quick Dry Shirts

Miscellaneous Items Required

  • 1 Tube of Sun Block (SPF 30 or +)

  • 1 Head Lamp for Summit Ascent

  • 1 Flashlight for Camp Use

  • 1 Pair of Sunglasses: Better with nose guard & side covers

  • 1 Camera: Including films and sufficient batteries

  • 1 Swiss Army Knife (optional)

  • 1 2-Litre Water Bottle

  • 1 Alarm Clock

  • Pair of Walking Poles/Stick

Toiletries Required

  • 1 Toothbrush, Toothpaste, Razor, Soap, and Other Personal Items

  • 1 Lip Balm

  • 1 Roll of Toilet Paper

  • 1 Camp Towel

  • 1 Small Mirror

  • 1 Sewing Kit
